The Washington Post has just revealed that President Trump gave highly classified information to Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during last week’s meeting.
The information was reportedly “considered so sensitive that details have been withheld from allies and tightly restricted even within the U.S. government.”
The United States obtained the information as part of a top-secret information-sharing agreement with a partner nation who has a mole within the inner workings of Daesh (ISIS/ISIL), an enormously important strategic asset which President Trump just put at risk with his big mouth.
Our ally had not given us permission to give that information to Russia, putting our relationship with that nation at risk just so that Trump could please his taskmasters in Moscow.
He “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies” groused anonymous intelligence agents.
“He seems to get in the room or on the phone and just goes with it — and that has big downsides. Does he understand what’s classified and what’s not? That’s what worries me” said another official.
While it is not technically illegal for Trump to share this information with Moscow, it represents not only a huge slap in the face to the unknown ally who gave us the information in the first place but put in jeopardy one of our most important assets in the fight against Daesh – an asset which we need now more than ever as US troops and our Syrian Defence Force/Kurdish People’s Protection Units advance on Daesh’s capital of Raqqa.
If Hillary Clinton or President Obama had done this, the right-wing would be calling for their heads. Trump ran his entire campaign disparaging Clinton for possibly exposing classified information on her private email server – but is now literally handing out top-secret info to hostile foreign powers. The hypocrisy is simply mind-blowing.
This is the first obvious example that we have of President Trump putting the interests of Moscow ahead of the foreign policy interests of the United States. What more proof do we really need to know that Trump is beholden to the Kremlin?
