David Frum, George W. Bush’s first head speechwriter as President, understands that tragedies do not happen in a vacuum. One need not have been in the White House on September 11, 2001 to know that they are the byproduct of many preceding events.
As a Republican who’s been near the highest reaches of the federal government however, Frum is in a position to bring critical context to President Trump’s many misdeeds, and he does not take that role for granted.
Of course, Frum understands that Trump had nothing to do with last night’s tragedy. He also understands that Trump’s combination of prideful ignorance and reckless bluster is endangering American lives.
Here, Frum reminds us that actions have consequences. Let’s hope the president is paying attention.
As we mourn Manchester, remember: for a moment of ignorant boasting, the president betrayed one of the West’s best sources inside ISIS.
