Rep. Darrell Issa Finally Held A Town Hall Today And It Didn’t Go Well

Days ago, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) was in the news for fleeing to the roof of his office to avoid speaking with his constituents in California. Today, he finally faced concerned citizens in what amounted to a contentious town hall.

Among his notable gaffes, which drew an onslaught of boos from the crowd, Issa likened health coverage to car insurance.

“How many of you own a car that does not have full collision— has liability but does not have collision on it?” Issa asks in a tepid and patronizing attempt to explain the concept of a “choice” to his constituents. Issa seems to overlook the fact that when cars break, it is not the responsibility of the American taxpayer to fix that car. Also, reminiscent of Romney’s “corporations are people” comment, Issa should perhaps be reminded that cars are not people.

Issa goes further to suggest that his constituents who have been so critical of him amid his close alignment to Donald Trump are part of Indivisible, “an organized protest movement with paid people running it.”

Met with an wave of boos, Issa tries to walk back his comments by claiming that he has “never looked at anybody at any of [his] town hall meetings and said, ‘You’re a paid protestor.’”

Mike Levin, Issa’s opponent heading into the 2018 midterm election, was on site and live tweeting at the town hall.

Issa has grown increasingly unpopular in his California district after casting a deciding vote to repeal and replace Obamacare – without a CBO score – which only narrowly passed the House of Representatives 217 to 213. After avoiding his own constituents on numerous occasions, and openly disparaging them other times, Issa is fighting an uphill battle as 2018 approaches.
