Freshman Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) just went way off the deep end in a world where it is already common for Republicans to spew violent, anti-Islamic rhetoric.
Higgins, who goes by Captain from his time leading the Opelousas Police Department (a post he resigned after backlash from referring to perpetrators as “animals“), posted on his Facebook page a rant about hunting and killing every “single radicalized Islamic suspect.” (Full post below.)
The unabashed display of racial hatred is so shockingly despicable from a federal official, that it is easy to miss the call to undermine the American legal system in favor of violent vigilanteism — a clear abdication of every U.S. Representatives’ sworn oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States.
Still, the most troubling aspect of Higgins’ words are the consequences they could have. On one hand, the irrational hatred of Muslims from so-called leaders lends fuel to Isis recruitment efforts. On the other, it incites real violence against innocents from white supremacists that seems to be getting worse by the day.
Higgins’ reprehensible statement is a blight on an already shameful 115th Congress. The Congressman is provoking violence even as he claims to oppose it, professing to stand for a free world before betraying his Christian-only intentions and pledging to fight for “the good and righteous” while barely masking his disdain for all but white conservatives.
That a U.S. Representative felt comfortable making this statement publicly should be a concern for us all, and it is the responsibility of each of us to stand with our innocent neighbors, regardless of color or creed, and forcefully speak out against such vile hate speech from public officials.
