As the country anxiously awaits ex-FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate intelligence committee on Thursday, the special investigation into Trump’s possible collusion with Russia quietly gains steam. Another former FBI Director, Robert Mueller – the special prosecutor in charge of the investigation – has been assembling an all-star team to ensure the truth is finally fully revealed to the American public.
Politico reports that Mueller has hired prosecutors with experience investigating the Mafia, Enron, and the Watergate scandal.
The pedigree of the team Mueller is assembling says a lot about how he expects the investigation to proceed. These are men and women used to taking down the most corrupt breeds of politicians and criminals. Furthermore, they’re used to dealing with much more competent malefactors than Trump and his lackeys, so it seems safe to presume that if there is even a shred of wrongdoing, it will be uncovered.
Mueller has also hired Andrew Weissman, the leader of the DOJ’s criminal fraud unit. Weissman oversaw investigations into the Enron fraud scandal and also prosecuted the infamous Gambino, Genovese, and Colombo crime families.
So far the team has been focused on reviewing all of the materials that have accumulated at the FBI and DOJ. Once they’re in possession of all of the facts available so far, the battle-hardened investigators will be able to strike out. The combined experience of the team means it will be well equipped to follow the trail through any manner of malfeasance or obstruction they may encounter.
Trump should be very worried.
