It’s easy to forget that, once upon a time, Senator Al Franken enjoyed an accomplished career as a comedian and a comedy writer. So it shouldn’t surprise us when the Democrat from Minnesota is quick on his feet and delivers an improve – worthy zinger like he’s still a regular on Saturday Night Live.
That’s exactly what he did today live on the air with MSNBC’s Katy Tur. He appeared on the show to discuss the Republican’s secretive effort to ram-through their ObamaCare repeal and replace bill, but he was soon interrupted by Tur to inform him that the President had just tweeted.
“Breaking news, he tweeted?” Sen. Franken said with a smirk.
She read the President’s tweet, which addressed the completely unrelated situation in North Korea: “While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out. At least I know China tried!”
Sen. Franken’s response?
“I don’t know why he put the exclamation point on there. I don’t think he knows that.”
Once the ironic pun about the President’s peculiar use of punctuation landed, he hit his main point.
“May I say that the President might be gullible when it comes to China,” he opined, with a subtle but deliberate shoulder shrug. “Might be, that’s a guess.”
Sometimes, it takes a comedian to make sense of this President.
