The state of Oregon has made history as Gov. Kate Brown just signed the most progressive expansion of abortion availability bill in American history.
The women of Oregon will now be able to have an abortion at any time, for any reason, and to have it paid for by taxpayers.
The bill also allocates another $500,000 for cost-free reproductive health care for immigrants who aren’t covered under the Oregon Health Plan.
“Unintended pregnancies can perpetuate cycles of poverty, and we can help stop it. It is a woman’s right to choose when and if she is ready in her life to have a child” cheered Democratic State Sen. Laurie Monnes Anderson.
Oregon also recently expanded the reproductive health services that insurance companies are required to cover:
All government and private-sector health plans must also cover birth control, vasectomies, prenatal and post-partum care, counseling for domestic abuse victims as well as screenings for cervical and breast cancer and sexually transmitted diseases.
This is what a truly progressive and humane healthcare system looks like. The complaints of religious taxpayers not wanting to fund abortions should fall on deaf ears, for their tax dollars funds wars in the Middle East that kill tens of thousands of innocent civilians but somehow fails to provoke the same kind of ire that the private affairs of their neighbors does.
Reproductive rights are human rights, and a healthy society is one that plans when it does or does not have children. It’s very inspiring to see the state of Oregon leading the way and demonstrating to the nation how healthcare should be handled.
