The right-wing has warped the very fabric of reality in this country. For years, FOX News has been pumping out hysterical, often racist and bigoted, constantly misleading, propaganda. The ascension of Donald Trump was the natural apotheosis of this degradation of facts, and he rode into the White House on a wave of outright lies and fear mongering.
If this country is ever going to restore its sanity, it must return to a de-radicalized, honest public discourse. It’s up to every patriotic American to fight back against the propagation of misinformation and hatred.
Now, beloved celebrity George Clooney and human rights lawyer and activist Amal Clooney have teamed up with the Southern Poverty Law Center to fight the growing menace of right wing extremism. The married couple is donating $1 million through The Clooney Foundation For Justice, according to The Guardian.
Called to action by the tragic events of Charlottesville, in which innocent counter-protestor Heather Heyer was murdered by a radical white supremacist terrorist, the Clooneys are taking drastic actions to return the country to safety and normalcy.
“Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate,” George Clooney told The Guardian. The “two sides” bit is a direct refutation of Trump’s now-infamous comments in the wake of the Charlottesville tragedy, in which he defended Neo-Nazis, and created a false equivalence between them and peaceful counter-protesters.
“We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States. What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate,” the couple added in a joint statement.
George Clooney has slammed Trump in the past, as well as his disgraced and fired former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, pointing out the hypocrisy of both men and their attacks on “Hollywood elitists.”
“This is the part that makes me a little crazy. When Meryl [Streep] spoke, everyone on that one side was like, ‘Well, Hollywood elitist Hollywood speaking.’ Donald Trump has 22 acting credits. He collects $120,000 a year from a Screen Actor’s Guild pension fund. He is a Hollywood elitist,” George Clooney said, according to Gossip Cop.
“Steve Bannon is a failed film writer and director. That’s the truth, that’s what he’s done. He wrote a Shakespearean rap musical about the L.A. riots that he couldn’t get made, you know, which is a shock. He made a lot of money off ‘Seinfeld.’ He’s elitist — Hollywood. That’s the reality, if you want to look at it that way,” Clooney went on to add.
Amal Clooney has a long history of fighting for human rights. Her past work includes advocating for recognition of the Armenian Genocide and involvement in International Criminal Tribunals at The Hague. She brings an unparalleled level of expertise and a long history of activism to the fight against right-wing extremism.
According to its website, The Clooney Foundation for Justice was established in 2016 to advance “justice in courtrooms, communities, and classrooms around the world.”
