On the heels of a condescending comment made by the wife of the Secretary of the Treasury, Louise Linton, that made national headlines, a watchdog group has formally filed a Freedom of Information Act request for records regarding Steven Mnuchin’s trip to Fort Knox in Kentucky.
The group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) alleges that the trip, on which Linton accompanied her husband on a U.S. Air Force jet, was timed so the couple could enjoy the solar eclipse.
The controversy was brought about after Linton, an actress who only recently married Mnuchin, posted a photo of herself deplaning a government aircraft in full high-fashion garb, tagging luxury brands Hermes and Valentino in the photo. After a critic commented, “Glad we could pay for your little getaway #deplorable,” Linton launched an all-out assault on the stranger, rife with tone-deaf, classist tropes and dripping with condescension.
Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice [sic] to your country? I’m pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day “trip” than you did… You’re adorably out of touch.
CREW has requested “copies of all records concerning authorization for and the costs” of the trip, in addition to costs for other government-funded transportation since Mnuchin took office.
“The requested records would shed light on the justification for Secretary Mnuchin’s use of a government plane, rather than a commercial flight, for a trip that seems to have been planned around the solar eclipse.”
Ironically enough, this inquiry was only brought about because Linton was unable to curb her egregiously patronizing retort to a complete stranger over the internet. She may have felt entitled enough to launch her diatribe on Instagram, but time will tell if she is as forthright and vocal now that an investigation into government misuse is on the horizon.
