A new profile in POLITICO has given us an illuminating behind-the-scenes look at how President Trump can be manipulated into doing whatever a shrewd advisor wants by simply tricking him.
Budget director Mick Mulvaney boasted to POLITICO that he was able to convince the President to agree to cutting Social Security disability benefits for 11 million people by simply telling him that it was “welfare.”
“Look, this is my idea on how to reform Social Security,” the former South Carolina congressman began.
“No!” the president replied. “I told people we wouldn’t do that. What’s next?”
“Well, here are some Medicare reforms,” Mulvaney said.
“No!” Trump repeated. “I’m not doing that.”
“OK, disability insurance.”
“Tell me about that,” Trump replied.
“It’s welfare,” Mulvaney said.
“OK, we can fix welfare,” Trump declared.
And that was that.
While Trump’s defiant ignorance is well-documented at this point, it is truly astonishing to see that the President of the United States is so stunningly ignorant of major policy initiatives that affect the lives of tens of millions of people – and how easily he is manipulated by the devious, scheming ideologues that fill his administration.
