Today, Trump “shivved” his own party, according to The Daily Beast.
By agreeing to the three-month debt ceiling raise the Democrats preferred, rather than the eighteen months congressional Republicans had hoped for, Trump cut off his nose to spite his proverbial face.
He hurt his chances to pass his own legislative agenda and the only reason he did it, was evidently to spite Senate Majority Mitch McConnell for not “protecting” him against Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller’s Russia Investigations.
But Trump did not reserve his ire for McConnell alone. According to one White House advisor, as quoted in The Daily Beast article, Trump’s snub was a ““deliberate decision not to care about Ryan’s feelings.”
While he may be trying to punish Republicans for not protecting him from the consequences of his own actions, in the end, the only one Trump is really punishing is himself. Without allies in his own party, he won’t be able to get much done in Congress.
The Republicans have thus far protected their president from impeachment. But if it seems he’s cozying up to the opposition, their charity may have its limits.
