As Floridians scramble to evacuate from Florida on the heels of Hurricane Harvey’s devastation in Texas, journalist Dan Rather took to Facebook to dispel the myth that these catastrophic events are somehow not tied to climate change.
The iconic newsman, true to his compassionate character, calls first for “pledges of assistance” for those facing the imminent threat of Hurricane Irma, as well as those recovering from the wreckage brought about by Hurricane Harvey.
He then states, in no uncertain terms, that the “climate is changing” and “we cannot ignore this any longer.” Republicans in Congress, along with the Trump administration, have opted to bury their heads in the sand. This course of action – a blatant and transparent pander to the fossil fuel industry that finances their re-election campaigns – has not served any Americans beyond those Republicans holding office in Washington, D.C.
Dan Rather puts it best:
“We ignore this threat, like we ignore a hurricane, at our collective peril.”
