George Clooney was in a feisty mood last night. The actor was at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his new film, Suburbicon, and while speaking to reportes, the topic inevitably turned to politics.
Clooney has been a vocal critic of President Trump, sparring with him publicly throughout the campaign. He also has some Hollywood history with Stephen Bannon, the current Editor in Chief of Breitbart News and former (read: fired) chief strategist to President Trump.
After being prompted by reporters, Clooney laid into the now disgraced former Trump campaign and White House operative, who has been in the news all week in the build up to his much anticipated 60 minutes interview set to air this Sunday.
“I like picking fights,” Clooney said, “and I like that Breitbart News wants to have my head. I’d be ashamed 10 years from now if those weaselly little putzes, whose voices are getting a lot higher every week as this presidency starts to look worse and worse, weren’t still [after me],”
Clooney was apparently just getting warmed up. After belittling the alt-right website Bannon runs, he then directed his fire at Bannon himself.
“Steve Bannon is a failed f@#king screenwriter, and if you’ve ever read his screenplay, it’s unbelievable. Now, if he’d somehow managed miraculously to get that thing produced, he’d still be in Hollywood, still making movies and licking my ass to get me to do one of his stupid-ass screenplays.”
Bannon made a ton of money at Goldman Sachs, and then moved to Hollywood to become a movie producer. He crossed paths with guys like Clooney and Sean Penn, who also had some choice words about his experience working with Bannon.
“Bannon was then, as he is now, simply another bitter Hollywood wannabe who went rogue by way of toxic narcissistic iconoclasm,” Penn told Death and Taxes Magazine back in. “But, deep in his heart, he’s just a conniving hateful bloated punk who despises mankind. And then there are also the bad things about him.”
Clooney wasn’t done. After leveling Bannon, he exposed the rest of the Hollywood Elite currently serving in the White House.
“Hollywood is being quite well represented right now in the West Wing somehow,” he said, pointing out that Trump still receives an annual payments from the Screen Actors Guild and loves to brag about his Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has a number of producer credits to his name, including several high profile movies like Entourage, Batman v. Superman, and Live, Die, Repeat staring Tom Cruise. Not exactly representative of the average Americans they claim to fight for. Clooney save his last flurry for them.
“ You want to call me a Hollywood liberal? Come at me. I sold ladies shoes, I sold insurance door to door, I worked at an all-night liquor store, I cut tobacco for a living. I can change the fan belt on my car. I grew up in that world in Kentucky. I know every bit of that world, and I know my friends and what they believe. And I know this is not a moment in our history that we’ll look back and be proud of. So if I’m not standing on the side I believe to be right, I’d be ashamed.”
