Former Secretary of State Colin Powell called out the Republican Party today and demanded that it “get a grip on itself” as prominent members bend over backward to excuse the president’s flagrant attempts to solicit dirt on election opponents from our overseas allies.

“The Republican party has got to get a grip on itself. Republican leaders and members of the Congress, both Senate and the House, are holding back because they’re terrified of what will happen to anyone of them if they speak out…This is not the way the country is supposed to run. And Congress is one of the institutions that should be doing something about this. We got to remember what the Constitution started with: “We the People,” not “Me the President” said Powell.
Republicans in Congress are proving themselves to be the self-serving cowards we always knew they were, too terrified of an angry Trump tweet and the prospect of a primary challenge from some rabid blood-and-soil MAGA psycho to fulfill the oath they swore to uphold the Constitution.
Astonishingly, not only are many Republicans refusing to condemn the president for his attacks on whistleblowers and our intelligence community, many of them are arguing that it is in fact good that the president is attempting to bully other countries into playing into his smear campaign against Joe Biden.
Powell is spot on here, but unfortunately, his words will certainly fall on deaf ears. The Republican Party is, and honestly always has been, beyond redemption and if he really wanted to make a statement, Powell would leave the GOP for the party that actually cares about the integrity of our government and upholding the Constitution.
