Trump jokes that Napoleon should protect the Kurds because he won’t
Donald Trump had his “Let them eat cake!” moment on Twitter today while trying to explain his indefensible decision to abandon the steadfast American allies in the series of Middle East wars that our country has embarked upon.
….and Assad to protect the land of our enemy? Anyone who wants to assist Syria in protecting the Kurds is good with me, whether it is Russia, China, or Napoleon Bonaparte. I hope they all do great, we are 7,000 miles away!

Beginning his tweet with a lie about the extent of the defeat of ISIS and its sympathizers in the region — a lie he confirmed in a subsequent tweet that stated that some U.S. troops will remain in southern Syria “to continue to disrupt remnants of ISIS” — the president joked about his isolationist move that enabled a Turkish military campaign of potential genocide towards the Kurds by telling the now vulnerable ethnic group that he doesn’t care who else they turn to for help and flippantly suggesting that either of America’s two greatest rivals or a dead French emperor could handle the job that he shirked.
Using America’s physical distance from the battlefield as his lame excuse for not caring about the fate of the Kurds, Trump seems to forget how America was attacked on September 11th, 2001 by Saudi Arabian terrorists who were almost equally far away when they planned their deadly attack.
Trump continued his defensive propaganda effort in his next set of tweets, again emphasizing the distance of the battlefield from the United States as if our nation hadn’t spent billions on aircraft to transport our troops to wherever they are needed to protect lives and democracy.
….I would much rather focus on our Southern Border which abuts and is part of the United States of America. And by the way, numbers are way down and the WALL is being built!

By pivoting to an argument that he’d rather focus the nation’s resources on his imaginary border wall — which has yet to have a single foot of new construction added to the existing fence — Trump ends this batch of tweets the same way he started them — with a lie.
The only true fact in the president’s tweets is his statement that “numbers are way down.” While that’s not true in the way that Trump likely means it — from the context of his statement, he’s obviously referring to illegal border crossings although he doesn’t state it explicitly — the president’s approval numbers are way down in the latest polls, with a majority of Americans now agreeing that he should be impeached and removed from office.
With tweets like these, it’s no wonder that those approval numbers are dropping so precipitously.
