Trump attacks Hillary Clinton over Jill Stein “Russian asset” accusations

Donald Trump has been remarkably quiet on Twitter today — that is if you consider retweeting or quoting other people’s posts as a form of silence.

It took until mid-afternoon on Saturday for the president to use his own words in his posts — presumably (since the tweet had no grammatical errors, it may have actually been composed by one of his aides).

With Trump’s travails in Congress over the House’s impeachment inquiries and the Republican revolt against his betrayal of America’s Kurdish allies, the majority of the president’s pejorative posts lately have been directed at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) or House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA).

So it must have been somewhat nostalgic for the president to launch an attack on one of his veteran targets, Hillary Clinton, his former opponent for the presidency and the woman who won the majority of the popular vote in the controversial election.

Despite her defeat in the antiquated and politically-distorting electoral college, the former Secretary of State, like former President Obama, is never far from Trump’s consciousness and has been the subject of many a tweet long after she conceded the asterisk-marked election marred by Russian interference.

Today, Trump went back on the offensive against Hillary Clinton after his rival accused Jill Stein — the Green Party candidate in the 2016 election who helped tip the balance towards Trump in a couple of crucial swing states — of being a “Russian Asset” during a podcast interview with former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe.

That sound you just heard was a collective guffaw from anyone with a shred of environmental awareness, none of whom could restrain themselves from that involuntary reaction after hearing the president — who has neutered the EPA by staffing it with former energy industry lobbyists and opened up former National Parks land to mining interests, among other nature-condemning actions — criticize Democratic efforts to forge a Green New Deal that is designed to both save the planet while creating jobs and rebuilding vital infrastructure.

Watching Trump as he defends the need for a Green Party is absolutely hilarious given his own record as the man who unilaterally withdrew our nation from the Paris Climate Agreement and who scoffs at evidence-based scientific predictions of imminent climate collapse.

It is, however, unclear who the president is referring to when he says “they” need a Green Party. Is it the Russians that he thinks needs the Green Party? The Republicans to help split the progressive vote?

If you’re looking for clear syntax and logically consistent thought in a tweet from Donald Trump, then you are in the wrong parallel universe.

Still, in these troubled times, Trump falls back into attacking his familiar adversary where he feels most comfortable. It’s an old trick from an old dog, but one that makes him feel better as his world falls down around him.
