Former Tea Party congressman turned NeverTrump Republican Joe Walsh tore into fellow conservative Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) this afternoon over his sycophantic defense of the President’s impeachable behavior.
Speaking to CNN’s Gloria Borger at the CITIZEN by CNN conference in New York, Walsh berated Graham for “selling his soul to the President” and savaged him by quipping “if John McCain were alive he’d be slapping Lindsey Graham upside the head.”
Over the past few years, Graham has established himself as President Trump’s most obsequious lickspittle in the United States Senate. No matter how offensive or extreme the president’s actions or decisions become, he can be counted on to excuse and whitewash anything Trump does, even if it flies in the face of his own past statements or political beliefs that Graham has ostensibly held for years.
Graham’s bootlicking has gone from disappointing to truly pathetic since the death of his good friend and staunch Trump critic Sen. John McCain. He has been one of the loudest opponents of the impeachment hearings, falsely arguing that due process is being denied and that the inquiry defies historical precedent.
Just this afternoon, Graham lashed out at the media and complained that “if we were doing this, you’d be beating the sh*t out of us…We’re not telling the House they can’t impeach the president. What we’re telling the House is, there’s a right way to do it, and a wrong way to do it. … This is one part legal, and two parts politics.”
In reality, the House is following the rules laid down by Republican House Speaker John Boehner in 2015, likely in order to conduct closed-door hearings for the Benghazi investigations against Hillary Clinton — an actual witch-hunt that wasted millions of dollars and came up with nothing.
These impeachment proceedings, on the other hand, are based squarely in reality and are focused on proving abuses of power that the president himself has admitted he did.
John McCain had many faults, but it is undeniable that if he were alive today he would be absolutely appalled to witness the weaponization of our relationship with Ukraine for Trump’s selfish political ambitions and the betrayal of our Kurdish allies — and equally appalled to see how Lindsey Graham has carried water for him the entire way.
