Impeachment is coming for Donald Trump and there’s nothing he can do about it. The case is ironclad. Trump tried to use the powers of his office to strongarm the president of Ukraine into opening an investigation into Joe Biden in the hopes of damaging his 2020 presidential bid. Prior to the fateful phone call between the two, Trump froze almost $400 million in aid to the war-torn nation, ensuring that he had material leverage to accomplish his crooked goals. One struggles to imagine a more cut and dry cause for impeachment and now it appears that the administration has realized as much.
The Hill reports that White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham has stated that the administration is “prepared for an impeachment to happen.” She went on to say that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has made it “very, very clear that the House Democrats are going to vote.” Since the administration doesn’t have any way to stop the impeachment process at this stage, Grisham threw out some of the usual Trumpian spin, calling the impeachment a “sham” and saying that she wants the Democrats to “come to their senses.” It’s the rhetorical flailing of a White House that knows it’s helpless to credibly defend itself.
While she claims that the administration still doesn’t think impeachment in the House is a “foregone conclusion” they’re “expecting it.” The admission comes just a day after the House officially passed a vote to proceed with the impeachment inquiry. It seems safe to presume that we will soon hear Donald Trump himself grapple with the reality of impeachment, and there’s little mystery to how he’ll handle it.
Expect more of the same complaints, repeated unconvincing claims that he did nothing wrong, and infuriated tweets. We are now in the home stretch. The president is going to be impeached and he is going to handle it incredibly poorly.
