Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) has proven himself to be one of America’s greatest public servants. Over the past few years, he has emerged as one of Trump’s most formidable foes and his levelhanded approach to the impeachment inquiry is one of the primary reasons why we now stand upon the cusp of the impeaching the worst president in our history. He has weathered a constant storm of abuse from Trump, his deranged followers, and the right-wing propaganda machine with aplomb while managing to maintain focus on holding the president accountable. In every way in which Trump is not a patriot, Schiff is.
In a new interview with The New Yorker, Schiff didn’t hold back his feelings about our monstrous leader. He rejected the idea that Trump’s scheme to force Ukraine into opening a damaging investigation into Joe Biden and his son was really due to an earnest desire on the part of the president to root out corruption.
The Congressman discussed a call between a U.S. diplomat in Ukraine and United States Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland during which the former asked the latter if Trump gave a “shit” about Ukraine. Sondland replied that the president only cared about “big stuff,” namely investigations.
“That says it all. The President doesn’t give a shit about what’s good for our country, what’s good for Ukraine. It’s all about what’s in it for him personally and for his reëlection campaign,” said Schiff. “That is a perfect summary of this whole scheme,” he added.
The Congressman’s blunt words mirror what a lot of us have long known. Trump has no sense of duty to America, no real desire to improve the lives of his citizens. He is a creature motivated solely by his own ego and base appetites who views the presidency as a means of enriching himself, his family, and his cronies. His disdain for the Constitution is palpable.
We are so far past the point where anyone should be treating Trump with respect or ascribing any kind of positive motives to any of his actions. Respecting the office of the president is impossible to do when the president himself so clearly doesn’t. Impeaching him will be a major blow against authoritarianism and corruption and a big step towards reclaiming our Republic from the jackals currently running wild in the White House.
