Trump argues that Giuliani tried to set up extrajudicial Biden Ukraine probes “out of love”

Given Rudy Giuliani’s ceaseless — and allegedly unpaid — efforts on Donald Trump’s behalf in attempting to conjure evidence from Ukraine to discredit the president’s political opponents, it’s no wonder the president spent so much time singing his personal attorney’s praises at the White House today during a press scrum following a roundtable discussion on the Governors’ Initiative on Regulatory Innovation.

Responding to a question from a reporter about how much Giuliani has shared with him from his most recent visit to the Eastern European country on the Black Sea, Trump dismissed the question with a curt “not too much” before launching into a long litany of praise for the former New York City mayor and federal prosecutor.

Trump’s words of esteem for his lawyer were an epic hosanna that seemed like they would be more appropriate for an award show introduction or a funeral, so florid was the president in his flattery for the man so tightly involved in the activities that have led to his imminent impeachment.

McConnell admitted coordinating impeachment with Trump. Add your name to demand he recuse himself from the trial!

One would have thought that Trump was providing his attorney a recommendation for a job in the DC or Marvel comic universes to battle super-villains alongside Superman, Batman, or Spiderman when he described Giuliani as “a very great crimefighter — he was probably the greatest crimefighter over the last 50 years, very smart.”

Trump continued on, describing his political dirt-excavating assistant as “the best mayor in the history of the city of New York” in a likely dig at one of his potential Democratic rivals, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, not to mention such lauded former mayors as Fiorello La Guardia, Ed Koch, John Lindsey, Jimmy Walker, and Dewitt Clinton.

Not content with simply using superlatives to describe Giuliani’s accomplishments, Trump then embarked on a ringing endorsement of his lawyer’s character — an endorsement akin to receiving accolades on one’s agility from a paraplegic —  saying:

“He’s a great person who loves our country, and he does this out of love, believe me, he does this out of love,” the president said, practically demanding sainthood for the man whose motivations he puts on par with Christ’s.

“He sees what goes on, he sees what’s happening. He sees all of the hoax that happens when they talk about impeachment hoax or the Russian collusion delusion,” Trump continued with his newest rhyming catch phrase.

“And he sees it and he’s a great gentleman and he was again, the greatest mayor in the history of New York,  and probably the greatest crimefighter in the last 50 years. He knows what he’s doing,” the president said in concluding his accolades for Giuliani.

Trump’s love for his crimefighting attorney was also on display in his Twitter feed today as he retweeted four posts that Giuliani tweeted from the right-wing extremist news site OAN that continued to perpetuate the discredited claims that the corruption issue in Ukraine was tied to the Bidens rather than being currently being carried out in plain sight by the president and his lawyer.
