House Republican compares impeachment vote to the Pearl Harbor attack in shocking defense of Trump

The impeachment vote against Donald Trump today appears to be breaking the collective brain of the Republican Party. Already, one Congressman has compared the Democrats’ decision to hold the president accountable for his abuse of power to the trial of Jesus Christ at the hands of Pontius Pilate. Hyperbole seems to be the GOP strategy of the day, and their belief that such ridiculously exaggerated claims will convince anyone shows just how little they think of the average American’s intelligence.

Now, we can add another ludicrous claim to the rapidly growing pile. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) is comparing today’s impeachment vote to the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor that resulted in the deaths of over 2400 Americans and pulled the United States into WW2. To say that it’s an insult to the memories of the brave men and women who died on that day is a gross understatement. It’s indefensible. There is nothing tragic about the impeachment of the worst president in American history over his choice to betray his oath of office.

“December is such a great month and there are so many great dates in December and we talk about the wonderful things that have happened in Decembers of the past. There’s also in addition to Christmas being something we celebrate, the Boston Tea Party took place in December,” Kelly began, winding himself up for his shameful remarks.

McConnell admitted coordinating impeachment with Trump. Add your name to demand he recuse himself from the trial!

“But also on December 7th, 1941 a horrific act happened in the United States and it is one that President Roosevelt said this is a date that will live in infamy,” Kelly went on, referencing the date of the Pearl Harbor attack. “Today, December the 18th, 2019 is another date that will live in infamy,” he added.

“When just because you hate the President of the United States and you can find no other reason other than the fact that you’re so blinded by your hate that you can’t see straight, that you’ve decided the only way we can make sure this president doesn’t get elected again is to impeach him,” said Kelly, conjuring every ounce of faux self-righteousness he could muster.

Of course, blind hatred isn’t the reason for this impeachment vote. The president’s attempts to coerce a foreign leader into harming a 2020 rival and then obstructing the Congressional inquiry into those attempts are. Republicans have no one to blame but their dear leader.

From there, Kelly went on to hypocritically whine about elected officials putting “political power” over “principle.” While he was clearly talking about Democrats, his description far better suits the manner in which Republicans are circling the wagons around their blatantly corrupt leader. It appears there is no low the GOP won’t sink to, no comparison too sacred to invoke when it comes to sticking up for President Trump.
