The House of Representatives will finally vote on the impeachment of Donald J. Trump today, making it a historic day in the truest sense. While the Republicans can be expected to put party over country as usual and vote to protect this disastrous, corrupt man, the Democratic majority ensures that Trump will almost certainly be impeached.
At that point he will be put on trial in the Senate, where the Republican majority will likely save him from being removed from office. Even so, a successful House vote alone will stain him with the ignominious distinction of being only the third president in American history to be successfully impeached. It’s not the kind of thing that painfully egocentric Trump is equipped to deal with.
For proof of that, one need only glance at his Twitter account this morning. He went on a truly pathetic retweeting spree, amplifying random accounts who had anything nice to say about him and sharing messages from GOP hacks who are still trying to argue that there is no case for impeachment despite the mountains of evidence and credible testimonies.
In one tweet he admitted that he will be impeached today, but is clearly having trouble accepting that reality.
“Can you believe that I will be impeached today by the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, AND I DID NOTHING WRONG!” he wrote.
It should surprise precisely no one that just about every part of this claim is a lie. The “Do Nothing Democrats” have in fact passed hundreds of bills in the House aimed at improving the lives of Americans. The problem is that Mitch McConnell’s Senate has refused to vote on any of them. It’s Trump’s party that is really doing nothing.
As for the claim that Trump did nothing wrong, he’s been repeating it ceaselessly since the impeachment inquiry first began and it’s less convincing now than ever. We know that he asked the Ukrainian president for the “favor” of opening an investigation into Hunter and Joe Biden to hurt the latter’s 2020 campaign. The stunning abuse of power is all the more remarkable because he outright admitted it by releasing the transcript of the call, which he then urged his supporters to read with the safe presumption that few of them would actually do so. He even urged his followers to read the transcript in this tweet as well. They haven’t and they won’t.
Trump added that this sort of impeachment should never happen to another president again. Ideally, it shouldn’t. But far more important than that is that future presidents are sent a clear message that they can’t exploit the powers of the Oval Office to target a political opponent and undermine our elections.
“Say a PRAYER!” Trump ended the tweet, a particularly funny demand given the fact that Trump’s religious beliefs are nothing more than a political calculation aimed at maintaining Evangelical support. There’s also something incredibly disgusting about a serial sexual predator who has locked children in cages asking anyone for prayers to help him through a political crisis of his own making.
If you are the praying type, a better use of your time would be praying that this man is removed from office as quickly as possible so that we can move on from his cruel legacy and start healing all the damage he has inflicted on this great nation.
Can you believe that I will be impeached today by the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, AND I DID NOTHING WRONG! A terrible Thing. Read the Transcripts. This should never happen to another President again. Say a PRAYER!
