Trump doesn’t issue statement or leave Mar-a-Lago after pushing U.S. to brink of war with Iran

Earlier tonight, the United States unnecessarily and recklessly pushed tensions with Iran to the brink of war when a Trump-approved drone strike assassinated the leader of Iran’s elite Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, and the leader of a major Iraqi militia as they were leaving the airport in the middle of Baghdad.

The unauthorized act of war — the killing of a senior military commander of a country we are not at war with — is a catastrophic escalation that Iran has already vowed will be responded to with a “strike.”

Barely two days into the new decade and possibly facing the biggest, and inevitably self-inflicted, crisis of his presidency, one would expect that the Commander-in-Chief would be rushing back to Washington D.C. in order to ensconce himself with his generals and intelligence officials, preparing for the serious consequences that will certainly be unfolding from this reckless act of violence.

McConnell admitted coordinating impeachment with Trump. Add your name to demand he recuse himself from the trial!

But that’s not on the agenda for Trump, who it appears will not be making a statement about the seismic events he has just triggered nor will be ending his vacation early. Instead, he will be speaking at an “Evangelicals for Trump” event before returning to Mar-a-Lago.

Qassem Soleimani was a hugely important figure in Iran, operating as the chief of the Quds Force — a combination of CIA and Special Forces — and a major general in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps. His killing is already being exploited as martyrdom in Iran and the government has threatened “violent retaliation” in reprisal.

It’s clear that Donald Trump has no idea how earth-shattering the killing he authorized this morning will be — and predictably, he has no interest in finding out. He has put the life of every American soldier in the Middle East at risk tonight and he doesn’t even have the decency to head back to the office.
