On Friday afternoon, the Trump administration released the design for the logo of his new “Space Force,” the newest branch of the bloated, insatiable leviathan that is the United States’ military. Founded on December 20, 2019, the Space Force has already become a punchline for critics of the president who see it as an unnecessary excess and an expression of the President’s childishness, and the release of the logo today did little to combat that narrative.
President Trump took to Twitter to share the image:
After consultation with our Great Military Leaders, designers, and others, I am pleased to present the new logo for the United States Space Force, the Sixth Branch of our Magnificent Military! pic.twitter.com/TC8pT4yHFT

It did not take long for fans of the iconic sci-fi show Star Trek to realize that the logo was highly reminiscent of the logo for the fictional Starfleet Command, the exploratory, scientific, and military organization for the setting’s United Earth.

While some fuddy-duddys insisted on pointing out that the U.S. military has always had a fascination with Starfleet…
The Starfleet fascination among space types in the military isn't new; this was Space Command's logo, which immediately preceeded Space Force pic.twitter.com/Ap3y5gHEWD

…social media immediately had a field day roasting the decision and the President in general:
It's a seal, not a logo. And the Space Force seal rips off a TV show. Are there studies showing a correlation between a regime's corruption and its incompetence? It seems like corruption could breed the sort of disinterest in public service that leads to performance issues.

donald trump choosing to make space force's insignia the evil fascist mirror universe starfleet logo is unusually perceptive of him

trying to tell 8 year old me how the president creating an irl starfleet is actually very bad and funny rather than cool

The most annoying thing about Trump stealing the Starfleet logo is we have him on tape ordering a mob style hit and Republican Senators are still going to vote to acquit him

Despite the obvious military aspects of Starfleet, Space Force (and by extension, everything Trump and his administration does) is the antithesis of the core philosophy of Star Trek.

"Donald Trump founded Starfleet" is convincing proof I didn't wake up from surgery in 1997 https://t.co/EARXLnJvu2

It's Starfleet but with an elongated sperm chasing its tail. https://t.co/4vBjTOsDti
