Trump rages about a top CDC official telling the truth about coronavirus risk

The greatest fear that critics of the Trump administration have held for a long time now is that the United States might suddenly face a crisis which our president—grossly incompetent and ill-intentioned at the best of times—would be uniquely unsuited to lead us through. With the global coronavirus outbreak dominating more and more of the news coverage, it looks like we might finally be lurching towards just such a crisis.

The Center for Disease Control is now warning Americans to prepare for the virus to disrupt their daily lives. Just yesterday, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the Director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said that it’s not a matter of “if” the virus spreads in America, it’s a matter of “when.” It’s beginning to look like a serious threat not only for the United States, but the entire world.

Even as things seem to be worsening, Trump appears to have little concern for the health and welfare of his citizens. He has repeatedly tried to downplay the coronavirus in a transparent attempt to prevent the markets from dipping and possibly negatively affecting reelection bid. For the umpteenth time, we find this man putting his own personal desires over the safety and security of the American people.

CNBC’s Eamon Javers reports that Trump was infuriated by Dr. Messonnier’s public announcement that the spread of the virus throughout the United States is inevitable.

“She never should have said that it’s bad,” a senior White House official told Javers, presumably echoing Trump’s opinion on the matter.

In other words, the administration is more worried about PR than ensuring that Americans are adequately warned and able to prepare for what could be a disastrous pandemic. One struggles to envision a starker dereliction of duty than this. The president’s primary and most sacred duty is protecting the American people. If he doesn’t have the intellect or courage to guide us through this outbreak, the very least he can do is step aside and let people like Dr. Messonnier do their jobs.
