It’s now abundantly clear to any reasonable person paying attention that Donald Trump is pathologically incapable of taking the coronavirus pandemic seriously enough. The man whose early response to the outbreak involved dismissing it as a Democratic “hoax” has done little to improve on his initial behavior.
More and more Americans are dying by the day and the president is either inappropriately aloof or engaged in some bizarre fixation. At no point during this crisis has he projected anything even approaching the kind of leadership this nation needs right now.
Luckily for the American people, there are still adults in the room at the highest level of government. Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci has become a reliable fixture at the otherwise unhinged and useless White House press conferences.
Fauci has managed to maintain his professionalism despite the fact that he’s shackled to the worst president in American history during an unprecedented health crisis. On several occasions, he has been quick to correct the misinformation being pumped out by the right-wing media machine.
During today’s presser, Trump said that he respects “Tony” Fauci and that he told him to move to New York City to run against Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez because he would “win easily.”
Trump clarified immediately that he was joking, as if cracking such a cheap partisan joke during an event ostensibly dedicated to discussing the deadly virus ravaging this country is an acceptable thing for the president to do. It’s even more callous when one looks at any of the reports coming out of New York City now. The city is being hit harder than anywhere in the United States and as the bodies continue to pile up the American president is making light of the pandemic.
This country deserves a leader who will treat COVID-19 with the gravity it deserves. Instead, we’re saddled with this cruel, ignorant clown.
