In a stunning show of defiance, the Center for Disease Control has released pieces of its 17-page draft recommendations for re-opening the economy to the public after the White House rejected and buried them.
The Trump administration rejected the guidelines set out by our nation’s foremost experts on disease and virology on the grounds that they were too restrictive and “risked further damaging an economy that Trump was banking on to recover quickly,” making it appallingly clear that Trump is putting his re-election and the funneling of money into the pockets of his oligarch buddies above the lives of everyday Americans.
The White House reportedly told the CDC that these recommendations would “never see the light of day,” but they didn’t count on a heroic whistleblower defying the infamously anti-science Trump team and leaking the document, titled the “Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework,” to the Associated Press.
The Trump administration has been tightening its grip on what information about the virus and its spread across the United States it allows to reach the public; their refusal to allow the CDC to release the information makes it clear they are planning to accelerate the rate of economic re-opening with the full knowledge that to do so will needlessly put more American lives in danger, against the recommendations of the medical professionals they have largely ignored and minimized during this crisis.
“CDC has always been the public health agency Americans turn to in a time of crisis,” said Harvard professor and Obama admin swine flu veteran Dr. Howard Koh to the AP. “The standard in a crisis is to turn to them for the latest data and latest guidance and the latest press briefing. That has not occurred, and everyone sees that.”
Now that the recommendations have been released to the public, the Trump administration must be held accountable for planning to put American lives in danger just to advance his own political ambitions.
