They say that hate is taught and it certainly seems to be the case that most Republicans were raised in conservative households before going on to propagate the bigotries and prejudices foisted onto them by their parents. Sometimes though, you’ll see an individual who grew up and learned to think for themselves, rejecting reactionary ideologies for a more inclusive, progressive worldview. Such seems to be the case with Stephanie Regan.
In a series of tweets that have since gone remarkably viral, Regan urged Michiganders to NOT vote for her father Robert Regan who is running for state representative as a Republican and to “tell everyone” to do the same. While she declined to go into detail as to the reasons for her exhortation, she said that a quick Google search would reveal relevant information about his campaign.
The Daily Dot has since confirmed that the Twitter account does indeed belong to Ms. Regan. The website also printed a crash course in the worst things about her father. Bryan Rolli writes:
“Regan is a red-blooded Republican who previously described himself as ‘so conservative that he makes Rush Limbaugh look like a liberal’ and boasted about being the first candidate to support President Donald Trump. His issues include making English the official language in Michigan, opposing all forms of immigration reform (which Regan calls ‘a codeword for amnesty’), opposing abortion, and restoring Michigan’s constitutional militia. “
The Hill reached out to Mr. Regan for comment and he ended up giving the kind of deranged, deeply dishonest remarks that GOP politicians have become increasingly known for. Rather than defend his own beliefs or meaningfully engage with his daughter’s, he threw out buzzwords about “communism” and “Marxist” beliefs.
“A lot of students when they go off to these liberal university campuses, like the University of Colorado, the University of Texas and Austin – and she went to the University of Colorado in Boulder – and you know, they just kind of get sucked into this Marxist, communist ideology and she and I just don’t see eye to eye when it comes to the whole socialism, communism, Marxist philosophy,” said Regan.
He said his daughter fundamentally disagrees with him on the existence of systemic racism, which he claims only exists at “abortion clinics” that “target the African American” community. He also made disparaging remarks about climate change, implying that the scientific consensus is “debatable.” The staggering ignorance of such remarks gives a clear explanation for why Ms. Regan doesn’t want people voting for him. Even in a party as untethered from reality as the GOP, his comments are ludicrous.
Clearly, Michiganders would be wise to heed Ms. Regan’s advice and vote against her father. A man such as this doesn’t belong in civil society, let alone the statehouse.
