November is rapidly approaching and President Trump has no real platform with which to propel himself to a reelection victory. He doesn’t have a single meaningful accomplishment, is mired in scandals, and seems to be losing interest in being president at all. Thanks to his incompetence, COVID-19 continues to ravage the United States with over 129,000 dead and an economy in tatters.
Trump is unwilling to devote the energy and focus to this crisis necessary to affect positive change and is instead spending most of his time angrily tweeting, blowing racist dog whistles, and engaging in inane culture war rhetoric. It’s a strategy that the GOP is happily mimicking.
Republicans are wasting their time harping on and on about Confederate statues and their new favorite bugaboo Antifa. They want to paint presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden as some kind of unhinged radical, a smear so far removed from the truth that it’s destined to succeed only with the most extreme MAGA-heads. In all the ways that Trump is fringe and mercurial, former Vice President Biden is reasonable and level-headed.
Yesterday, Republican National Committee Spokeswoman Liz Harrington appeared on Fox News to complain about a recent op-ed from Biden in which he condemned Trump’s behavior, discussed Fourth of July and our nation’s founding, and promised a better future for America. Harrington slammed Biden for having the “audacity” to “literally rewrite the greatest foundational document in the history of mankind, the Declaration of Independence.”
Apparently, she was incensed at Biden and his “woke staffers” because the op-ed suggests that “all men are created equal” should be updated in practice to “all people are created equal and are guaranteed equality throughout life.” She said such a sentiment flies in the face of our constitutional Republic’s founding and the idea of freedom of opportunity. Demonstrating the same ignorance that seems to have infected her entire party, Harrington denounced Biden for his “radical left socialism.”
The fact that a prominent GOP official such as Harrington would have a problem with treating all people, rather than just men, equally shows how warped the Republican Party’s collective worldview has become. Her implication that Biden is pushing for equality of outcome over equality of opportunity is just patently false and relies on misquoting what Biden actually wrote in his op-ed.
The relevant section from Biden’s op-ed reads:
“But Independence Day is a celebration of our persistent march toward greater justice — the natural expansion of our founding notion from ‘all men are created equal’ to ‘all people are created equal and should be treated equally throughout their lives.'”
All people should be treated equally in life and advocating for such a principle isn’t some crazy “socialist” idea. It’s basic human decency. By attacking Biden in such a weak, bad faith manner Harrington only succeeds in demonstrating that the GOP has nothing legitimate to hit Biden. They’re desperate and we can expect more and more of this kind of toothless mudslinging as Election Day grows closer.
Ummm…. did I hear her correctly there? Is that really the argument they want to go with?
