Rarely has the “monkey see, monkey do” maxim been played out as clearly as it has in the relationship between President Trump and the right-wing propaganda complex. As a reeling and desperate Trump’s rhetoric grows more and more openly divisive and absurd, his sycophants in the media dutifully match his tone and approach.
This is why the nation was last night treated to the disgraceful sight of white supremacist FOX News host Tucker Carlson trashing Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) because she argued that the nation needs to have a “national dialogue” about the appropriateness of George Washington statues on the grounds that they glorify a slaveowner.
This was met with derision from the outspoken Tucker, who groused that “you’re not supposed to criticize Tammy Duckworth in any way because she once served in the military” right before insulting her as “a deeply silly and unimpressive person” for saying that we should have a discussion about it, and concluded that she and the rest of the Democrats just hate America.
“But in the face of all of this, the conclusion can’t be avoided. These people actually hate America,” finished the insufferably smug Carlson, echoing the President’s appalling speech on the 4th of July.
She didn’t say we should tear them all down immediately and erase George Washington from the history books, but just that we should have a discussion about the best way for us to commemorate our problematic founders out of respect for those enslaved by them.
But for people like Tucker Carlson and his audience, the slave ownership is a positive thing that they would like to see emphasized in our nation’s statues.
Duckworth took to Twitter and fired back with a reference to the sacrifices she has made in the line of duty for this country, asking the spoiled heir to the Hungry Man TV dinner fortune if he would like to walk a mile in her prosthetic legs.
Does @TuckerCarlson want to walk a mile in my legs and then tell me whether or not I love America?

If anyone “hates” America, it’s Tucker Carlson, who spends every night promoting hateful ideas that spit in the face of the values our country was founded on and glorify the darkest, most reprehensible periods in our nation’s history. It’s deeply offensive to see a racist brat like Carlson be so insulting to a veteran and a Senator of the United States over something as trivial as statues.
