The Trump administration is steadily marching American children towards a cliff with every intention of watching apathetically as they spill over the edge. Despite the deadly COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the United States and the skyrocketing daily cases, the White House has decided that schools will fully reopen in the fall, with the president going so far as to shamelessly attack the CDC guidelines designed to make such openings a bit safer.
The reason for this incredible nihilistic campaign isn’t hard to untangle. Trump wants students back in school at their regular time and without too many guidelines because he wants to project an atmosphere of normalcy ahead of the November election. He seems convinced that if he simply ignores the coronavirus the rest of us will forget about it and decide against voting him out of office for his staggeringly inept handling of the outbreak.
Not only is it an incredibly insidious plan, it’s doomed to fail. The rapidly deteriorating state of America can be laid directly at Trump’s feet and we won’t soon forget it. This soulless use of students as political pawns is doomed to backfire but in the meantime, there’s no telling how many innocent children will die as a result of the president’s electoral gambit.
Today, Trump’s Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnnany was asked about the president’s push to open schools and as usual, she proved all too happy to defend Trump’s recklessness. She stressed that he wants schools “open and full, kids being able to attend each and every day.”
“The science should not stand in the way of this,” McEnany added. She then spewed some talking points about how other countries in the Western world are moving ahead with school reopenings. What she conveniently failed to mention is that none of these peer nations are lead by Donald Trump, and so their more competent leaders were able to wrestle COVID-19 down to a manageable level where such reopenings make sense.
McEnany then made the absurd claim that “the science is on our side here,” a blatant gaslighting attempt that flies in the face of the aforementioned CDC guidelines which Trump has already attacked.
The simple fact of the matter is that the president and his cronies couldn’t care any less about our children, they just want to win another election. By pursuing this agenda, they have rammed home how deeply, terribly unfit they are to lead this country.
McEnany: Pres. Trump wants schools to open, "and when he says open, he means open and full, kids being able to attend each and every day."
