The Republican Party has decided at the height of a deadly pandemic that the best use of its collective time is feigning outrage over the fact that former President Barack Obama spoke at the funeral of Rep. John Lewis and dared to speak positively of voting reform, the signature issue of Lewis’s life.
Anyone who listened to Obama’s remarks in good faith would characterize them as sincere, moving, and entirely appropriate. Of course, the GOP never needs a good reason to attack the first Black president and so they leaped at the chance to smear his eulogy, conveniently ignoring the fact that President Trump declined to pay his respects when Lewis was lying in state in the Capitol and was not at the funeral.
Obama’s comments only appear “too political” if you’re a Republican with a vested interest in suppressing voter turnout and undermining the very fundaments of our democracy. Voting reform should not be a partisan issue.
“Even as we sit here, there are those in power who are doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting by closing polling locations and targeting minorities and students with restrictive ID laws and attacking our voting rights with surgical precision, even undermining the Postal Service in the run-up to an election that’s going to be dependent on mail-in ballots so people don’t get sick,” said Obama.
Every single American needs to watch this clip of Obama talking about voting rights. He calls out GOP for:
-closing polling places
-targeting students & minorities with voter ID laws
-attacking voting rights with "surgical precision"

On his White Power Hour last night, Tucker Carlson unloaded on Obama over his eulogy, going so far as to call him “one of the sleaziest and most dishonest figures in the history of American politics,” an incredibly ironic line coming from the man who regularly defends the sexual predator currently occupying the Oval Office.
Carlson went on to claim that Obama only cares about the upcoming election and that the eulogy was delivered for politically mercenary reasons. The attack was a textbook case of projection: Carlson decided to go after Obama on his show because he wants to smear Democrats in the hopes of helping Trump win reelection. Obama, on the other hand, genuinely cares about voting issues and John Lewis’s legacy.
“Imagine if some greasy politician showed up at your loved one’s funeral and started throwing around stupid partisan talking points about Senate procedure. Can you imagine that?” Carlson added.
Even by the incredibly low standards of America’s most popular racist program, Carlon’s comments were disgusting. It’s one thing to not like Obama’s politics. It’s another thing entirely to describe an incredibly intelligent, compassionate, and well-spoken statesman like Obama as one of the “sleaziest and most dishonest” men in American history.
