Trump attacks Democrats and the FDA in Saturday morning Twitter barrage

As Donald Trump prepares for whatever he can salvage from the Republican party’s oft-disrupted national convention plans, one can easily see the themes he plans to disseminate in the multiple evenings of political boosterism ahead in the week to come.

It’s all laid out in his Twitter feed.

Let’s take a look at the president’s posts this morning to see what we can discern about how he intends to attack his Democratic opponents and pitch his record of malfeasance, incompetence, and disaster as worthy of being extended another four years.

Trump’s first tweet of the morning portends a continuation of his campaign of fear — a hoary GOP tradition dating back at least as far as G. H. W. Bush’s infamous “Willie Horton” ad that played on the demonization of Black Americans and suburban anxieties over crime.

Local Portland officials know full-well the dangers of the addition of shadowy federal forces in unmarked vans and tactical combat gear with no identifying insignias to the volatile situation on the ground in Portland, especially combined with the provocation of right-wing militias spoiling for a race war.

Neither they nor Oregon state officials are likely to grant the president his wish, particularly since they’ve been trying to eliminate the DHS irregulars from the city for weeks now.

If the president believes this post helps his reelection cause, he is totally deluded since all it does is highlight his failures to respond to peaceful demands for human rights with compassion rather than force.

Trump next moved on to attacking Democrats on religion, playing to his evangelical base by portraying his opposition as godless heathens.

Trump obviously knows nothing about the Pledge of Allegiance and how it arrived at its modern form.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy and read in its original like this:

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

In 1923, the pledge was revised to add the words “of the United States of America” after “Flag” and was revised by Congress again in 1954 at the urging of President Eisenhower at the height of the Cold War to add the phrase “under God.”

The biggest problem with Trump’s tweet, however, is not his failure to learn the history behind the pledge, but the fact that his accusation is a complete lie, as MSNBC’s Kyle Griffin pointed out was confirmed by Snopes.

Failing to connect with his misbegotten lies, the president tried to bolster his flailing campaign in the crucial swing state of Wisconsin, by assaulting the Democrats for largely abandoning the site of their convention after being forced to hold the affair virtually due to Trump’s failures in addressing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

This tweet is pretty laughable when one considers the fact that the GOP has essentially done the same thing to not one city, but two, having announced that they would mostly abandon the initially contracted location in Charlotte, North Carolina after the state’s Democratic governor insisted on strict masking and other preventive measures be implemented to prevent the pandemic from spreading further.

Having decided to move Trump’s acceptance speech to Jacksonville, Florida at considerable additional expense, the explosion of COVID cases in the Sunshine state forced them to cancel that idea as well and move to a similarly virtual convention plan as the Democrats held.

The president switched back to fear-mongering in his next post, hoping to frighten those few suburban housewives who still conform to his 1950s-era stereotype of a stay-at-home white mom with no career and a breadwinning husband in a single-income family.

Trump failed to notice that the suburbs are much more diverse than they were back then, that the “suburban housewives” are much more likely to be working or single moms, and that few families can survive on a single income in the Trump economy.

With those suburban moms increasingly on the frontlines of BLM protests, the electorate is changing at a much more rapid pace than Trump’s conceptions can keep up with.

The president continued his crusade against science with his next post.

So desperate for a cure for the pandemic that his failures have transformed into an albatross around the neck of his re-election campaign, Trump grouses that the FDA still wants to ensure that any drugs approved for treating the coronavirus are both safe and effective despite his urgent need to be seen as doing something quickly to stop the spread of the pandemic.

The paranoia of his “deep state” accusations is palpable.

He extended his promotion of unproven cures and anti-scientific methodology by claiming to have studied many papers and spoken to numerous doctors — perhaps even some who don’t believe in alien DNA and demon sperm — who agree with his magical thinking.

Of course, Trump could not let the day go by without making an unjustified attack on the same method of voting that he regularly has used for his own ballots.

Yes, there is a “Disaster in the wings,” but only if a sufficient number of American’s fail to be allowed to express their preferences to rid the White House of your desecration of the premises and elect Joe Biden as our next president.
