The Trump White House is scrambling to deny and discredit a new report from The Atlantic which claims that the president has voiced staggering disrespect for the U.S. military behind closed doors.
Allegedly, Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France, a sacred place where American soldiers who died in WWI are buried, saying: “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” Trump also allegedly called the 1,800 U.S. troops who died at the Battle of Belleau Wood in the same war “suckers.”
As if those two remarks weren’t terrible enough, President Trump is also said to have called Senator John McCain, a POW of the Vietnam War, a “f*cking loser” shortly after his death in 2018. On top of that, Trump went with his former Chief of Staff John Kelly to visit the grave of his veteran son Robert Kelly and said: “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?”
The Atlantic reporting paints a picture not just of a president who doesn’t adequately respect the sacrifices of our servicemen and women, but who actively disdains them, who believes that giving one’s life for one’s country is an act of stupidity rather than love, who believes that he is better than our slain heroes because he was wily enough to wriggle out of military service. The allegations are in perfect keeping with what we know of Trump’s character given that he has previously attacked Gold Star families and stated that he prefers people “that weren’t captured” while discussing McCain’s time as a prisoner of war.
Many Americans, especially those who have lost a loved one to combat, are understandably outraged to learn of the president’s comments. Now, Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton has waded into the criticism to slam the president over his disrespect. Eaton released a fiery video on Twitter and shredded the president’s facade of patriotism.
“I’m pretty unhappy with you, Mr. Trump. So I’m going to keep this short for your famous short attention span. You have shown disrespect to the military on countless occasions. I am stunned that anybody in the United States military would consider you anything but a ‘loser’ or a ‘sucker.’ You’re no patriot,” said Eaton.
The retired general proceeded to produce the dog tags of his father, a fighter pilot who crashed and was killed during the Vietnam War, the very same war Donald Trump used his infamous cowardly “bone-spurs” excuse to avoid.
“Our Army, our Navy, our Marine Corps, our Air Force, our Coast Guard. Brave men and women. They’re not just brave. They’re smart and wise. So, Mr. Trump, come Nov. 3, we’re all voting for a real patriot — Joe Biden. And everybody who hears this, please take notice and please vote. Vote Democratic. Our country’s honor depends on it,” said Eaton.
His video deserves to be seen in its entirety. The next time some Trumper tells you that Republicans “support the troops” show them this clip. This president has no respect for the brave men and women who lay down their lives for our Republic and by continuing to support him the GOP has shown that neither do they.
