The Trump White House is struggling to keep its head above water as a tidal wave of criticism washes over it after a bombshell article from The Atlantic revealed numerous ways the president had disrespected the U.S. military during private conversations.
Trump allegedly referred to American WWI soldiers buried at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France as “losers” and those who died in the Battle of Belleau Wood as “suckers.” He also referred to former POW Senator John McCain as a “f*cking loser” after his death and told his former Chief of Staff John Kelly that he didn’t “get” why men like Kelly’s son were willing to die for their country.
His disgraceful comments weren’t reserved solely for the dearly departed though as he also stated that he didn’t want wounded veterans appearing at a military parade he was planning. “Nobody wants to see that,” Trump said of veteran amputees.
Angry responses have been flooding in—including at least one from a retired general—and now Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a double amputee Iraq War veteran, has added her powerful voice to the growing cacophony.
“I take my wheelchair and my titanium legs over Donald Trump supposed bone spurs any day,” said Duckworth during a Joe Biden campaign phone call according to The Hill.
Given Trump’s track record of casting aspersions on POWs and attacking the families of Gold Star recipients, it makes sense that Duckworth would be unsurprised by the president’s egregious disrespect.
“I’m not shocked but I am appalled. Of course, he thinks about war selfishly. He thinks about it as a transactional cost,” said Duckworth. “This is a man who spends every day redefining the concept of narcissism. A man who’s met a life of privilege, with everything handed to him on a silver platter,” she added.
Perhaps the most pathetic part of this entire story is that it’s unlikely to move the needle for MAGAheads. They’ll choose to either deny the veracity of The Atlantic’s reporting so they can go on telling themselves the comforting lie that Trump cares about the military or they’ll decide his comments aren’t that bad and that the military is in fact full of “losers” and “suckers.” In any case, this president must be removed from power at the ballot box come November. Our servicemen and women deserve better.
