Donald Trump has the blood of countless Americans on his hands. Thanks to a soon-to-be-released book from veteran journalist Bob Woodward, we now know that the president intentionally misled the public about the risks of COVID-19. Over 190,000 Americans are now dead.
“I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic,” admitted the president to Woodward. In February, the same month he was dismissing concerns over the pandemic as a Democratic “hoax” he told Woodward during a private interview that it was actually “deadly stuff.” The interviews—which occurred from December 2019 to July 2020 and of which there are tapes to back up Woodward’s reporting—also show Trump confiding that COVID-19 is “more deadly than even your strenuous flus.”
Since there are audio recordings, the White House can’t simply lie and deny Woodward’s allegations like they usually do. Instead, they want us to believe that the president who regularly sows fear about Antifa, immigrants, and Muslims was lying about COVID-19 to avoid “panic.” Donald Trump loves spreading panic, it’s one of the political tools he returns to over and over again.
The simplest explanation for the deeply dangerous deception is that he was afraid that admitting the existence of a national health crisis could hurt his reelection prospects. As he always does, Trump chose his own political interests over the wellbeing of the American people.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) addressed the president’s malicious negligence at a press briefing today and gave a brutal, incisive breakdown of the magnitude of Trump’s actions.
“What the president did in those comments showed his contempt. Contempt for the American people and their health. Contempt for science. Contempt for any real effort to crush the virus. Contempt for his supporters. Their children. Their parents,” said Pelosi.
“He hid the facts and refused to take the threat seriously, leaving the entire country exposed and unprepared. He didn’t want to cause a panic? Why? Because of the stock market? Nobody wants to cause a panic. You want to show leadership, show a strategic plan, following the science, allocating the resources in order the get the job done. Even now he refuses to listen to science which is just a tragedy,” Pelosi went on, clearly genuinely horrified by Trump’s behavior.
