Sedated Trump announces plan for “patriotic education” in terrifying speech at National Archives

On Thursday afternoon, President Trump gave a downright terrifying speech on “American History” at the site of the National Archives, a building we are certain he did not know existed until today. Burdened with giving a speech he did not write about subjects that do not interest him, the extremely low-energy Trump droned his way through a wildly fascistic and heavily fearmongering speech about the threat posed by the “left-wing” today, portraying them as rabid radicals determined to carry out a “cultural revolution to destroy the American revolution.”

“We must clear away the twisted web of lies in our schools and classrooms, and teach our children the magnificent truth about our country. We want our sons and daughters to know they are the citizens of the most exceptional nation in the history of the world” begins Trump.

Sounding like a 1930s dictator with his hyperbolic nationalism and obsession with a vast left-wing conspiracy that does not exist, Trump framed the national fight against white supremacy and its enforcers as a crusade against American values.

“Left-wing mobs have torn down statues of our founders, desecrated our memorials, and carried out a campaign of violence and anarchy. Far-left demonstrators have chanted the words ‘America was never great.’ The left has launched a vicious and violent assault on law enforcement, the universal symbol of the law in America. These radicals have been aided and abetted by liberal politicians, establishment media, and even large corporations. Whether it is the mob on the street or the cancel culture in the boardroom, the goal is the same — to silence dissent, to scare you out of speaking the truth, and to bully Americans into abandoning their values, their heritage, and their very way of life.”

By our founders, he means the founders of an explicitly white supremacist America, the Confederate States.

By our memorials, he means memorials to genociders and white supremacists.

By a vicious assault on law enforcement, he means protests against the enforcers of the racial caste system.

By cancel culture, he means the end of tolerated bigotry.

By our very way of life he means a white supremacist superstructure that by and large keeps Black Americans as a perpetually disenfranchised, impoverished, and exploitable underclass.

As if the insinuations of cultural assault by Judeo-Bolshevism weren’t explicit enough, Trump announced he would be signing an executive order to promote “patriotic education,” called the 1776 commission — a clear shot at the New York Times’ 1619 Project, which infuriated the right-wing for its efforts to center the experiences of Black Americans and reframe American history in terms of slavery and white supremacy.

Completely unwilling to offer the American people any kind of material — or medical, for that matter — relief from the ravages of coronavirus, the Trump team is tripling down on full-throated appeals to white supremacy and racism as a way to woo nervous voters wary of any more instability in deeply chaotic times.

The essence of the culture war argument is that any kind of racial and social justice will knock white Americans from their once-comfy existences and elevate the Other at their expense. While it is deeply to disturbing to witness, this kind of appalling display by the president should only be a reminder that we must redouble our efforts to convince those voters that more than a return to normalcy, the Democratic Party offers stability and the prospect of a better life for America and all of its children.
