Office of the Special Counsel launches investigation into Betsy DeVos for violating federal law

Over the past four years, numerous officials have cycled in and out of the Trump administration in what amounts to a neverending parade of clowns, fools, and opportunists. Often they were compelled to resign in some state of sordid disgrace and often they were simply fired for failing to tell our impetuous president what he wants to hear. One official who has somehow managed to keep her grasp on power—presumably because she’s terrible at her job and the GOP wants to gut the department she runs—is also perhaps the most widely disliked: Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

Unfortunately for the billionaire heiress playacting as an education official, she now finds herself under the microscope. Politico reports that the Office of the Special Counsel—the independent agency tasked with overseeing the Hatch Act—is now investigating DeVos for possibly violating that very act, which bars most forms of overt political activity by executive branch employees with exceptions for the president and vice president.

DeVos appears to have violated it by appearing on Fox News and attacking Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Afterward, the Education Department abused its official resources to disseminate the segment by sharing it on their Youtube page. In the clip from early Septemeber, DeVos smeared Biden for wanting to repeal her “school choice” policies, a favored euphemism used by Republicans who want to sap as much money and as many children from the public education system as possible.

“Today he’s turned his back on the kids that we’re talking about and he’s turned his face in favor of the teachers union and what they have to say and what they have to demand and it’s really shameful,” DeVos shamelessly claimed.

DeVos is far from the first Trump official to be investigated over the Hatch Act. As Politico points out, at least 12 other administration officials have been accused by the Office of the Special Counsel of violating the act. Ultimately, most of the incidents were deemed too minor for referrals. Trump’s former counselor Kellyanne Conway was the only official accused of a violation egregious enough to refer to President Trump for action. Unsurprisingly, our incredibly corrupt leader refused to take disciplinary action.

While it seems unlikely that DeVos will face any real consequences for her actions under this administration given the president’s fondness for completely ignoring the law when it’s convenient for him or his cronies, it’s still crucial that these kinds of violations are exposed and recorded. The American people deserve a full accounting of this White House’s lawbreaking and history deserves to know what these ignominious men and women did.
