Last night President Trump announced via Twitter that he and First Lady Melania have contracted COVID-19. Regardless of one’s feelings on the development, it’s difficult to argue that it’s surprising given his oft-articulated disdain for masks. One also can’t help but wonder if his contracting of the virus will finally convince his more deranged followers that the coronavirus is real and that health precautions against it must be taken seriously. The man who once dismissed the pandemic as a Democratic “hoax” has now proven that it’s anything but.
We should all be wishing this vile president a speedy recovery if for no other reason than that it will allow Biden to defeat him at the ballot box and send the world a strong message that America rejects Trumpism and all the cruelty and hatred it represents. A landslide victory for Biden against Trump is the first, most crucial step towards rebuilding the United States’ reputation on the world stage. Anything else than a humiliating electoral defeat would be the easy way out for Trump.
Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!

Responses to Trump’s announcement have been flooding in since last night and now Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has weighed in. She said that she “received the news with great sadness” and that she is praying for the safety of Trump and his family. She went on to say that she hopes this moment will help people recognize the pressing need for the HEROES Act, a Democratic COVID-19 stimulus package passed by the House of Representatives and held up by the GOP-controlled Senate.
“So maybe now that people who see the President of the United States with all the protection that he has and the First Lady still having this exposure it might be, as you say, a learning experience,” said Pelosi.
“But more than learning it has to be something that is acted upon,” she went on. “This is tragic. It’s very sad. But it also is something that again going into crowds unmasked and all the rest was sort of a brazen invitation for something like this to happen. Sad that it did, but nonetheless hopeful that it will be a transition to a saner approach to what this virus is all about.
As usual, Pelosi delivered a blend of compassion and blunt truth. Most tellingly, she used Trump’s diagnosis to focus attention on the plight of the American people suffering from this pandemic. This president’s life is no more important than the hundreds of thousands of people he has allowed to die through his incompetence or the countless others who’s lives have been ruined by the virus. He may not care about them, but the Speaker clearly does.
Speaker Pelosi says Pres. Trump’s behavior during pandemic “was a brazen invitation for something like this to happen,” adds that his positive test is "very sad" and that she's "nonetheless hopeful that it will be a transition to a saner approach to what this virus is all about.” pic.twitter.com/mLHDag0kBe
