Trump tweets from his hospital bed in first social media posts since he was brought to Walter Reed

Despite the varying reports of his current medical condition, Donald Trump somehow managed to get ahold of a phone and post to Twitter today.

While Trump’s physician Dr. Sean Conley told reporters at a medical press conference today that the president was not having any difficulty breathing nor was he being administered oxygen currently, another source close to the White House — rumored to be Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows — told reporters off the record that Trump’s vital signs “were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery.”

Despite the confusion over the president’s condition, or perhaps because of it, Trump posted to Twitter a congratulatory tweet thanking the staff at the Walter Reed Medical Center where he is being treated and claiming to feel “well.”

The tweet helped revive the president’s moribund feed which has dwindled to a couple of tweets per day  — after normally being filled with an avalanche of daily original posts and retweets — since Trump’s diagnosis was initially revealed on Thursday evening.

While his first tweet of the day concerned his medical condition, Trump returned to political hectoring with his second and only other tweet of the day so far with a post urging Congress to pass a pandemic stimulus bill.

While Trump’s tweet should have rightfully been sent as a direct message to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who has refused to even consider the generous stimulus legislation delivered to him by House Democrats, the fact that Trump may have some new perspective on the COVID-19 crisis while in his hospital bed, may mean that the American people most affected by the pandemic’s economic downturn may finally be closer to getting additional relief.

No matter what you decide to believe about Donald Trump’s current medical condition and prognosis, the very act of tweeting — or at least directing someone else to post on his behalf — shows that the president is still somewhat alert, if not of sound mind.

Hopefully, we’ll have better info about the president’s condition as the day progresses. In the meantime, we can use his now infrequent social media posts as a measure of his health, since it’s all we have right now.
