President Trump has announced via Twitter that he will be leaving Walter Reed Medical Center tonight at 6:30 PM after a weekend of treatment for his COVID-19 infection. The past few days have been a swirling vortex of speculation as it remained unclear for much of his stay exactly what kind of state the president was in.
While the White House insisted that Trump was fine throughout the weekend and that the hospital trip was made out of an abundance of caution, the administration’s complete lack of credibility after four years of nonstop lying made it difficult for most Americans to believe a single word they said. Sources indicated at several points that Trump he was in truly dire shape and being administered all manner of emergency drugs.
Now that it appears that he’s on the mend, Trump is rushing to exploit his illness in exactly the manner many of us feared he would. In the same tweet announcing his pending discharge, Trump stated that he is now feeling “really good” and then absurdly urged his followers to not be “afraid” of the coronavirus. That Trump would use his own illness to mislead the public about the severity of the pandemic is not surprising at this point, but it is inexcusable.
“Don’t let it dominate your life,” Trump went on. “We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs and knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago.”
It’s difficult to fully articulate just how perverse this tweet is. Over 200,000 Americans are now dead from COVID-19 and millions of others have contracted it and suffered terribly while the White House fumbled its response to the outbreak. People need to be more, not less, afraid of this virus because being afraid of it is the only thing that will encourage people to take the proper precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.
This president, after seeing firsthand how terrible the virus is, chose not to give the American people an accurate picture of the coronavirus. He could have used this moment to stress the need for masks, social distancing, and good hygiene. Instead, he’s chosen to once again downplay the pandemic to whitewash his own culpability in letting things get as bad as they have. The fact that many of his supporters believe that the coronavirus is a hoax or is at least overblown also clearly factored into the decision to pen such a deranged tweet. This man is a menace and public health risk and November cannot come soon enough.
I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!
