A West Virginia nurse who was one of the featured speakers during this year’s Republican National Convention has been charged in a shooting Thursday that sent another woman to the hospital.

Amy Jolene Thorn, also known by her maiden name Amy Johnson Ford, was arrested by the Williamson, West Virginia Police Department, and charged with the malicious wounding of Jonda Whitt in the incident that happened during an argument between the two women.

“Through the investigation we came to find out that two females got into a verbal argument, turning into one of the females getting a gun. She did shoot the victim one time in the abdomen area,” Williamson Police Chief Grady Dotson told local ABC affiliate WCHS, Channel 8.

“Amy is well-known around the area for her participation and going over to the RNC committee and a nurse that was helping out with the coronavirus and was on the front line,” the police chief said, according to the WCHS report.

The alleged assailant’s journey from West Virginia to New York City during the trying early days of the COVID-19 pandemic is what landed Thorn her invitation to address this year’s virtual Republican National Convention where she defended Donald Trump’s response to the still exploding coronavirus spread.

““President Trump recognized the threat this virus presented for all Americans early on and made rapid policy changes,” Thorn declared. ”As a healthcare professional I can tell you without hesitation, Donald Trump’s quick action and leadership saved thousands of lives during COVID-19,” Thorn declared in her RNC speech, viewable in the clip below.

The local Williamson Daily News gave this account of the Trump-praising nurse’s behavior back in her hometown.

“According to Williamson Police, Thorn and the victim were in an argument at 841 Vinson St. when Thorn went to her vehicle, retrieved a handgun, and shot the other woman in the abdomen,” ther newspaper relates.

“The victim was taken to ARH Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky, and then air-lifted to Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky, where she underwent surgery. Williamson Police said that the victim is expected to be OK. Police also said that Thorn claimed the shooting was in self-defense,” the account continued.

Oddly there was no mention of the wounded woman having any sort of weapon that would require a gun as self-defense.

Thorn was arraigned by a local county magistrate and is now out on bail after posting a $5,000 bond.
