Trump goes full projection with crazed tweets about crowd size and “mental fog”

The 2020 election is now a week away and rather than crafting some kind of nuanced final stretch pitch for reelection, Donald Trump is engaged in the same kind of petty, dishonest rhetoric he’s displayed for the past four years. The president seems either uninterested or unable to voice any kind of argument for himself that might appeal to moderates or undecided voters and is determined instead to simply appeal to the frothing right-wingers who constitute his core support base.

This morning, he woke up and launched yet another pathetic attack on Obama and Biden for the crowd sizes at their rallies, conveniently ignoring the fact that his own rallies, packed from wall to wall with MAGA maniacs, have proven time and again to be superspreader events for COVID-19.

Trump bragged about “drawing tens of thousands of peoples” to his rallies as if forcing so many people into confined spaces at the height of a deadly pandemic is something to be proud of rather than resounding proof of his irresponsibility and apathy towards the loss of human life. Over 220,000 Americans are now dead from coronavirus, in large part due to Trump’s inaction, and he seems hellbent on pumping that number up even higher.

Add your name to demand Pence stop endangering lives to campaign as the virus spreads through his inner circle!

“The Great Red Wave is coming!!!” Trump ended his tweet, evoking an image more akin to the bloody elevator scene from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining than any kind of electoral victory. The message is clearly just wishful thinking on Trump’s part because the polls show Biden maintaining an impressive lead over him with no indication that the election calculus will change barring some unforeseen catastrophe.

Not long after his inane crowd size tweet, Trump penned an even pettier and dishonest message. He accused “Sleepy Joe” of having “handlers” and said that they “ripped” the former vice president off stage because he “got lost in a ‘mental fog.'” The idea of Donald Trump—a man who struggles to get through a speech without meandering off into bizarre circuitous rants—accusing someone else of being in a “mental fog” is frankly laughable.

More importantly, the tweet shows just how desperate Trump is at this stage in his campaign. He can’t hit Biden on the issues, can’t stand on any real accomplishments of his own, so he’s reduced to peddling halfbaked conspiracy theories about his rival. In less than a week, we will finally be able to banish this man from our political landscape and take a step back towards a sane nation.
