Sen. Schatz tears into Ted Cruz for wasting time on Hunter Biden fake news censorship hearing

Many people have opinions about what the greatest threat to America is in 2020.

With the COVID-19 pandemic death toll reaching new heights, most Americans could believe that the coronavirus should be our gravest concern right now.

Others are more concerned with the economic and social disintegrations that have been collateral damage to the efforts to combat the virus.

Still others point to the Trump administration as the root cause of America’s inept response to the pandemic and therefore see removing the Donald from office as the quickest and best way to staunch our national bleeding.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has a different perspective.

Add your name to demand Pence stop endangering lives to campaign as the virus spreads through his inner circle!

Cruz’s scapegoating of big tech as the villain posing the largest threat to our democracy conveniently ignores the fact that it is the Trump campaign, its deluded QAnon-following supporters, and its Russian allies that are shoveling boatloads of lies, misinformation, and malicious propaganda on social media to try to sway the election results.

The Texas senator also forgets that the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — which reads “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” — applies to government suppression of speech, not to the ability of corporations to police their publishing platforms and weed out socially-damaging and/or blatantly false posts.

The fact that the Senate Commerce Committee is even holding a hearing today to interrogate the titans of tech from Google, Facebook, and Twitter — at a time when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has recessed the congressional chamber without action on a pandemic stimulus bill — seems to prove that the entire exercise is a mere political ploy on the eve of the election to distract from the Trump administration’s failures by assigning blame to the primarily passive purveyors of internet-based communications platforms.

Democrats at the hearing called out Senator Cruz’s assertions about the magnitude of the threat to free speech posed by big tech and noted the wasteful nature of the hypocritical hearing triggered by the refusal of social media platforms to disseminate phony, truly trumped-up allegations of dubious provenance against Hunter Biden.

Indeed, as Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) intimates, the hearings are likely to result in nothing more than a few newspaper articles, some minimal TV coverage, and nothing in the form of legislation — ostensibly the man business of the Senate, at least before Mitch McConnell ruled the roost — during the lame-duck session after an election that may see several current GOP senators sent packing.

It’s sad to see Senator Cruz misrepresent the true biggest dangers that America faces today.

It’s why America needs to end the Republican majority in the Senate and elect Democratic leaders who can help dig our nation out of the debacle created by Donald Trump and his cronies.
