The presidential polls are holding steady in predicting a likely win for Joe Biden next week but President Trump continues to hold his COVID-19 superspreader rallies, engaging in the same kind of fact-free rhetoric, petty insults, and scaremongering that has characterized his reelection campaign since the beginning. Staring down what could turn out to be a devastating defeat should enough voters show up to reclaim their country from his madness, Trump refuses to change tack.
Today, the president held a rally in Bullhead, Arizona seemingly to remind us all what a deeply weird and unfocused leader he really is. During part of the scatterbrained rant that passes for a Trump speech he mentioned supporter Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He then suddenly struck on a random idea: Joe Biden fighting in a UFC match.
“I don’t think Sleepy Joe would be a good fighter, do you? I asked Dana before,” said Trump. “One little gentle touch to the face and he’s down. He’s down and he wouldn’t get up very quickly would he?” mused the president, who himself is morbidly obese and recently recovered from a near-incapacitating bout of COVID-19.
“Joe Biden’s only—” Trump began, seemingly about to get back on topic before veering back to the weird UFC topic.
“Remember he said: ‘I’d like to take him to the back of the barn?’ Okay. Now, if I ever said that to him they’d say: ‘He practices violence. The president practices violence.’ No that’s right. Remember he said: ‘I would take him to the back of…’ That’s like if you have to fight somebody that’s your dream fight right?” Trump rambled.
Trump was presumably riffing on comments Biden made in 2018 when he said that if he and Trump were in high school and Trump made the kind of crude comments about women that he regularly makes Biden would beat him up behind the school gym. In other words, Trump was addressing an old grudge that has absolutely nothing to do with the quickly approaching election. As Biden surges ahead in the polls, Trump is busy jousting windmills.
