Lindsey Graham melts down after the Squad demands his resignation for election meddling

The late Arizona Senator John McCain would surely be turning over in his grave if he could see what his old pal Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has become in the years since his death.

Graham has abandoned all pretense of being anything other than a full-blown enabler and apologist for Donald Trump, jeopardizing his own career in the process and leading many observers to wonder what the president could possibly be dangling over his head to inspire such unwarranted loyalty.

The apotheosis of Graham’s unwavering subservience to the Trump agenda came with reports this week that he had called Brad Raffensperger, the Republican secretary of state of Georgia, and suggested that he find a way to discredit legally cast ballots in order to hand the states electoral votes to the incumbent president rather than the legitimate winner of the majority of votes, President-elect Joe Biden.

Luckily, Raffensperger was the rare member of the GOP with enough integrity to withstand the pressure from the president and his allies to illegally ignore the will of Georgia voters, and he not only rejected Graham’s overtures but made them public for the whole world to see.

The reports of that scandalous interaction caused a plethora of calls for Graham’s resignation from the Senate seat to which he just recently won re-election, including vociferous calls from “the Squad,” as the group of progressive Democratic congresswoman consisting of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) are known.

A Fox News segment highlighting the calls from “the Squad” for Graham to be held accountable for his dastardly attempt to thwart democracy inspired an epic hissy fit from the South Carolina Senator as he posted a defiant tweet declaring that he would not be leaving the Senate anytime soon and attacking the Democratic congresswomen as “Socialists,” a term more radioactive for his Republican followers than any fans of the progressive legislators.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar saw Graham’s tweet and felt compelled to correct his mistaken assumption as to why she and her colleagues were calling for Graham to leave the congressional body in shame.

Touché, Rep. Omar, although in today’s polarized media environment it’s unlikely that her riposte will reach anyone other than people who already agree with her about the necessity of Graham’s resignation.

Still, the idea of someone who has demonstrably tried to undermine the very foundation of the American democratic process remaining as a member of the most powerful legislative body in the land remains an abomination to our Constitution.

Flood Senator Graham’s office with calls demanding that he resign today. (202) 224-5972 is the number to call.
