As the inauguration of Joe Biden as our 46th president now seems all but assured — barring any other last-minute desperation plays by Donald Trump — the eyes of the nation rightfully turn towards dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting economic turmoil.

Unfortunately, with the politicization of public health measures and pandemic financial relief efforts during the run-up to the election, the task ahead for the incoming Biden administration looks daunting, especially with control of the Senate yet to be determined.

While the House of Representatives passed a generous and comprehensive relief bill months ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has prevented the measure from even being brought up for consideration in his chamber, arguing that the $2 trillion dollar relief package should only cost closer to around $500 billion and that corporations would need to be granted immunity from any coronavirus liability suits before they would even consider passing a bill to benefit the millions of Americans who’ve lost their jobs — and may soon be losing their homes — on account of the pandemic.

Progressive firebrand Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed her frustration with the Republican political decision to ignore the financial crisis caused by the outbreak in a tweet and then found herself engaging in a Twitter feud with one of the most sniveling of Trump’s senatorial lapdogs, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s initial tweet didn’t target Senator Cruz individually, but mostly assigned blame to Senator McConnell.

Cruz saw AOC’s tweet and replied with a gaslighting statement that tried to pin the blame for the failure for passing a relief bill on the House Democrats who have already offered substantial compromises to the bill that they have already passed.

Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez couldn’t let Senator Cruz get away with such inaccurate political propaganda without challenging the massive inaccuracies that it contained.

She set the Texas senator straight in her reply.

The Bronx-born Congresswoman emerges from that verbal duel with a gold medal in fact-checking.

Meanwhile, Senator Cruz is exposed as one of the group of heartless Republicans who blocked access to much-needed relief while gambling with the lives and livelihoods of Americans in pursuit of a second term for their pandemic-minimizing— and losing —  presidential candidate.

Now that the election has been decided, one would hope that the GOP leaders would drop the pretense and relent on their opposition to helping the millions of Americans whose economic situation has grown so dire.

Senator Cruz’s tweet indicates that until the Democratic candidates in the Senate run-off elections in Georgia win and give President-elect Biden the Senate majority that he’ll need to quickly advance his pandemic relief agenda, many Americans will continue to suffer needlessly.
