CNN’s Jake Tapper blasts GOP Senators contesting electoral college results as the “Sedition Caucus”
As 117th Unites States Congress begins its new term today, the federal government is facing a situation unprecedented since the days of the Civil War.
With 11 Republican Senators and an uncertain number of GOP representatives in the House now vowing their support for an unwinnable bid to reject the results of the certified electoral college tally determining that Joe Biden will be our next president — and lame-duck Vice President Mike Pence endorsing their efforts — many people are calling for those legislators who refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the democratic process to be denied their own elected seats in Congress as per the mandate of Section III of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability,” the Amendment reads.

Judging From CNN host Jake Tapper’s comments on his Sunday morning State of the Union program today, he just may be angry enough to favor taking that drastic move in order to end the mass hallucination that seems to have gripped a significant number of the members of the GOP.
Tapper began State of the Union today with a scathing indictment of these Republican partisans willing to jettison the basic principles of democracy to stay in Donald Trump’s good graces and to cement their political affiliation with him in order to certify their loyalty for their own future electoral prospects with the defeated president’s base of MAGA-hatted followers.
Tapper displayed the faces of each rebellious Senator — each willing to defy their own party’s nominal Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on this issue, if not the battle to give $2000 pandemic stimulus checks to their suffering constituents — as he dubbed the group the “Sedition Caucus.”
“On Saturday, 11 Republican senators said they would vote against counting electoral votes in Congress next week calling for, quote, ‘an emergency ten-day audit of emergency returns’ despite there being no evidence of widespread voter fraud,” Tapper started his indignant attack on the traitorous Senators. “The group is following the lead of Senator Josh Hawley who says he will formally object to Biden’s decisive win despite zero credible evidence that would justify such a move — zero.”
“Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska slammed Hawley and others of the sedition caucus saying, ‘adults don’t point a loaded gun at the legitimate government,'” the CNN host continued. “Mitt Romney said on Saturday “I could never have imagined seeing these things in the greatest democracy in the world.'”
As angry as Tapper was with the intended actions of the “Sedition Caucus,” he was even more incensed by the universal refusal by any of the participating traitors to democracy to speak to the media to try to defend their indefensible decisions.
“We invited each of the 12 senators involved in plotting this disgraceful effort to come on the show and try to defend and explain their position. Each of them declined or failed to respond,” Tapper revealed. “It all recalls what Ulysses Grant wrote in 1861: ‘There are two parties now, traitors and patriots.'”
Tapper’s quote from President Grant harkens back to the refusal by the post-Civil War Congress to seat the members elected from the former rebellious Confederate states because the House Elections Committee concluded that fraud, violence, or intimidation had been used against black voters, or, in some cases, that the election statutes of the states themselves were unconstitutional.
If the reason for this drastic step sounds somewhat familiar, it may be because, despite the multiple decades that have passed, that the not-very United States faces a similar situation today, with persistent attempts by Republicans to restrict voting rights having become a standard strategy for a minority party that has difficulty winning free and fair elections with universal suffrage.
Whether our current Democratic Party leadership has the courage to enforce the constitutional mandate to expel the seditious legislators remains to be seen, but when the situation inspires even a mainstream news anchor like Jake Tapper to begin his broadcast by stating that “The state of our union is facing a perilous start to 2021,” you know that pressure is mounting to respond to the insanely defiant undermining of our democratic norms.
