Trump refuses to call his violent Capitol rioters off, claims to represent “Law & Order” in tweets
The dam has broken. After violent clashing with police, Trump supporters have stormed the U.S. Capitol building in an effort to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory in what can only be described as an act of presidentially-sanctioned domestic terrorism.
Trump’s repeated claims that the White House is being stolen from him by mass voter fraud, coupled with his exhortations today for so-called patriots to march on D.C. have bubbled up into outright insurrection against the U.S. government. While it will almost certainly be put down in the end, this amounts to nothing less than a coup attempt by a sitting American president.
As the country watches in horror as traitors swarm the halls of Congress, Trump refuses to forcefully denounce the actions of the MAGA militia. He penned two incredibly milquetoast tweets, the first calling to “support” the law enforcement officers that his supporters are currently combatting. The second called for those in the Capitol to “remain peaceful” even though things long ago turned violent. Without a trace of irony, he repeated his lie that the GOP is the “Party of Law & Order.”
Nowhere in his tweets did he order his red hat-clad enforcers to exit the Capitol building, nowhere did he emphatically call for de-escalation. The reason is simple: he wants this to continue. He wants to terrorize his political opponents in the vain hope that somehow he can eke out a second term through intimidation alone. Donald Trump is a virulent enemy of American democracy.

Contrast these pathetic tweets with what Trump blasted out during the George Floyd protests. He wrote that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” This despicable creature believes that Americans advocating for racial justice should be shot but that reactionary paranoics literally overrunning the halls of our government should be treated with kid gloves. He must be impeached, removed from office, put on trial, and imprisoned. There is no other just option at this point.
