Marco Rubio tells Fox News Sunday that Trump’s Impeachment trial “is stupid”
With Senate Republicans now relegated to minority status, one would think that they would begin to reflect on the behavior that led to their four-year slide from controlling both the House and the Senate — as well as the White House — to completely losing their ability to have their hands on the levers of power.
Instead, as Senator Marco Rubio demonstrated this morning in an appearance on Fox News Sunday, they continue to refuse to admit that the seditious incitement of an unruly crowd of Trump supporters by the then-president was the spark that lit the raging inferno that the January 6th Capitol insurrection became.
Rather than supporting the subsequent impeachment of Donald Trump on account of his campaign of lies and violent rebellion-stoking, Senator Rubio apparently believes that the traitorous ex-president should face no consequences for his weeks of attempting to undermine the Constitution that he had sworn to uphold.
Speaking with Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, the Florida-man senator declared that he would move to dismiss the articles of impeachment lodged against Trump as soon as possible, suddenly relying on the “national unity” card as his excuse.
“I think the trial is stupid,” Rubio told Wallace. “We already have a flaming fire in this country,” he continued, charcterizing the upcoming impeachment trial as “a bunch of gasoline.”
“The first chance I get to vote to end this trial I’ll do it,” Rubio vowed.
The Florida Republican harkened back to President Gerald Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon, calling it “in hindsight important” for “moving the country forward,” despite the fact that in Nixon’s case his resignation from office at least implied an admission of guilt, whereas Donald Trump not only refuses to admit that he lost a free and fair election that he continues to insist was illegally stolen from him.
“I think [Trump is] entitled to due process,” Rubio said to Wallace. “The House doesn’t have much of a record of witnesses because they rammed it through very quickly … I think this is going to be very bad for the country.”
Of course, the House wouldn’t have “much of a record of witnesses,” since the trial phase of impeachments where witnesses are called takes place in the Senate, not the House of Representatives.
Rubio’s comments don’t bode well for his performance as an impartial juror in the upcoming impeachment trial of the disgraced ex-president.
After Rubio’s tirade against holding Trump accountable for the insurrection incitement that endangered the lives of all of the members of Congress and his own Vice-President, Chris Wallace — perhaps wondering if the potential primary challenge for his Senate seat by Ivanka Trump might be behind his vociferous defense of her father — inquired about whether he was worried about that prospect.
“I don’t really get into the parlor games of Washington,” Rubio replied.
“I don’t own the Senate seat, it doesn’t belong to me,” he continued. “If I want to be back in the U.S Senate, I have to earn that every six years.”
If that’s the case, Rubio should immediately start preparing for life beyond the Senate, since his performance in his job both before and after election day has earned him nothing but a pink slip.
